Visit the history-steeped town of Tetouan near Morocco’s Mediterranean coast on this private day trip from Tangier. With a private guide, soak up the Moroccan-Spanish flavor of this mountainside town, and hear about its Andalucian-influenced past and culture. Explore the UNESCO-listed 'medina' (old quarter), considered one of Morocco's best-preserved, admire the whitewashed residences and colonial-era architecture of the new town.

Depart from Tangier hotel or ville port by an air conditioned minivan with your local guide to Tetouan, a beautiful town set near the Mediterranean, beneath the Rif Mountains. Tetouan was the capital of Morocco’s Spanish Protectorate from 1912 to 1956, and boasts a distinctive Hispanic flavor. At its heart is a mountainside UNESCO-listed medina and whitewashed new town graced with palm-lined boulevards, mosques, and Spanish colonial-era architecture. On arrival, take a walking tour of the town’s highlights. Drink in the Spanish-infused atmosphere and enter the walled medina, still largely untouched from the 17th century. Walk the cobbled lanes past faded townhouses and painted doorways, and discover the former Jewish and Spanish quarters as you hear how Tetouan was founded here in the 1400s by Jewish and Muslim refugees fleeing Andalusia. Learn about local life and culture, and walk through the modern town to see landmarks such as the royal palace, mosques, palm-fringed squares, and Spanish-style buildings. Stop for lunch (own expense) at any of the charming restaurants and enjoy free time to shop and explore: perhaps visiting one of the interesting museums and scouring the medina for jewelry, trinkets, and other souvenirs.
